VW DQ200 DSG – P17BF & P189C Fault Code Explained
The DQ200 is a seven-speed DSG transmission with a dry clutch, developed by the Volkswagen Group. It has been widely used since 2007 in models from Audi, Volkswagen, Seat, and Škoda. The DQ200 is designed primarily for vehicles with transversely mounted engines and is suitable for up to 250Nm of torque.
The heart of this impressive transmission is the mechatronics, which houses the electronic TCU. This module controls the clutches and gears based on signals from a variety of sensors and controls the buildup of hydraulic pressure.
What do fault codes P17BF and P189C mean?
These fault codes indicate a problem with the hydraulic pressure build-up in the mechatronics:
- P17BF – Hydraulic Pump System Overload Protection
- P189C – Function Restriction due to Insufficient Pressure Build-Up
These fault messages indicate an overload or insufficient hydraulic system function. The TCU detects that the required pressure is not being built up (quickly enough), leading to limitations in the transmission’s operation. This could be due to internal wear or a defect in the mechatronics, for example.
Driving for extended periods with fault codes P17BF or P189C can lead to serious damage to the mechatronics or clutch. Prompt diagnosis and repair are essential.
What vehicles are fitted with a DQ200?
The DQ200 TCU is found in a wide range of Volkswagen Group models, including:
First generation DQ200 (0AM)
- Audi: A1 8X , A3 8P , TT 8J
- SEAT: Ibiza 6J , Leon 1P , Toledo 5P2/KG3 , Altea
- Škoda: Fabia 5J , Octavia 1Z , Rapid NA , Roomster , Superb 3T , Yeti
- Volkswagen: Golf V/VI, Polo 6R, Jetta III/IV Passat 3C/362 ,Touran 1T , Golf Plus , Cddy III , Ne Beetle , Sciocco
Newer generation DQ200 G and K version (from 2012)
- Audi: A1 8X , A3 8V
- SEAT: Ibiza 6J , Leon 5FB
- Škoda: Octavia 5E , Rapid
- Volkswagen: Golf VII, Pol 6C
Always check the mechatronic part number to determine the correct version.
Symptoms of error codes P17BF / P189C
These error codes can manifest themselves in the following complaints:
- Shocks when shifting
- Transmission won't shift or sticks
- Estickcy running mode (only even or odd gears available)
- Loss of traction
Solution: remanufacture or targeted repair of the DQ200 TCU
P17BF and P189C are often caused by a fault in the mechatronics system. In most cases, a complete transmission replacement is not necessary. A targeted remanufacture or replacement of the mechatronics system offers a lasting solution.
What does the manufacturer entail?
The mechatronic system is completely disassembled and subjected to a series of advanced tests. Every DSG mechatronic is extensively tested on our in-house developed test platform. This allows us to realistically simulate all the components, as if they were in a moving vehicle. This allows us to specifically detect malfunctions and assess the unit's proper functioning.
Why choose reconditioning?
- Cost-saving: considerably cheaper than a new mechatronic
- Sustainable: reusing components contributes to a circular economy
- Reliable: quality is guaranteed thanks to specialist knowledge and test equipment
