What is a speedometer?

A speedometer is a more colloquial name for a car’s instrument cluster – referring primarily to the main feature of the cluster. As such, a speedometer serves as the central information hub in a vehicle's dashboard, displaying the current speed while often integrating additional gauges and indicators.

It works in tandem with various sensors and the vehicle's computer systems to accurately measure speed and show important data to the driver, such as engine RPM, fuel levels, warning lights, and more.

The speedometer and other instruments on the dashboard provide a comprehensive and user-friendly interface for monitoring the car's performance and status.

Signs your speedometer requires repair

  • Erratic or inaccurate readings: If the gauges (speedometer, tachometer, fuel, etc.) fluctuate erratically, show inaccurate readings, or fail to align with the vehicle's actual operating conditions, it could indicate an issue with the instrument cluster.

  • Warning lights: Any warning lights or error messages illuminated on the instrument cluster itself or related to the various systems it monitors (engine, transmission, brakes, etc.) should prompt further investigation.

  • Intermittent operation: If the entire instrument cluster functions properly sometimes but fails to display, exhibits flickering, or has issues intermittently, it could signify a fault or loose connection.

  • Dim or failing illumination: If the backlighting or illumination of the instrument cluster is dim, flickering, or fails to turn on, it may indicate a problem with the lighting system or power supply.

  • Physical damage: Visible cracks, scratches, or other physical damage to the instrument cluster's display or surrounding area could impair its function and readability.

  • Electrical issues: Problems with the vehicle's electrical system, such as faulty wiring, grounding issues, or voltage irregularities, can affect the operation of the entire speedometer and instrument cluster.

  • Moisture intrusion: If moisture or condensation is visible inside the instrument cluster, it could lead to corrosion and failure of the electronic components.

If you notice any of these signs, it's advisable to have your speedometer inspected or repaired by a qualified technician to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Types of speedometers

  • Analogue: These old-school gauges use spinning needles for a straightforward display. They don't require electronics.

  • Semi-digital: Combining analogue and digital, these retain spinning needles for basics like fuel while digital screens handle advanced data like speed.

  • Digital: Fully flat screen with no spinning needles. Precise digital readouts with customisable graphics. Can display extensive vehicle data but may lag if refresh rates are slow.

Why should I get my speedometer remanufactured rather than repaired?

If a driver notices their speedometer acting up, a typical trip to the repair shop might involve ordering a new speedometer or a quick fix. Our approach offers a cost-effective solution that guarantees greater reliability and long-term performance for the issue.

Opting for speedometer repair through remanufacturing comes with the advantage of addressing any inherent flaws or weaknesses in the unit.

By meticulously assessing each component's quality and pinpointing the root cause of the problem, we replace it with a superior part. This significantly lowers the chances of encountering the same issue again and ensures enhanced performance.

Is remanufacturing good for the environment?

Choosing remanufacturing for your instrument cluster emerges as a superior option compared to simple repairs. This involves a comprehensive restoration process, making sure that the new speedometer meets original specifications for reliability and performance.

Furthermore, this method proves to be cost-effective when compared to buying a new speedometer, making it a practical and environmentally friendly way to refurbish your customer’s speedometer to its optimal, or even improved, condition.

How much will speedometer repairs cost?

Our remanufacturing processes are tailored to each client, based on their specific requirements.

For instance, while most of your speedometer may function properly, you might need your fuel gauge repaired, or other individual components in your dashboard, such as your rev counter may require attention. If you're interested in learning the cost of speedometer repair for a specific make and model, please reach out to us, and our team will provide you with a quote.
