The Mercedes error code P1856, also known as "Selector Lever Position Detection Failed", occurs on several models with an automatic transmission. This error code can also often be read in combination with error code P240C - The CAN signal for the selector lever position from component N15/5 (electronic selector lever module control module) is implausible.
The error code P1856 and P240C causes problems with gear selection. This results in incorrect display or non-recognition of the selector lever position on the dashboard. Common symptoms include difficulty shifting into reverse (R) or into park (P), difficulty or inability to shift gears, or being stuck in a particular gear.
The most common cause of the error codes is a defective automatic transmission selector lever.
