Modern Volkswagen Group (VAG) vehicles built on the MQB platform are chock-full of sophisticated electronics, so it’s no surprise that even the gear shifter can fail.

Maybe you’ve come across the U0103 or VAG-specific 28775 / 049411 fault codes before? These codes indicate a loss of communication with the Gear Shift Module (GSM).

In this article, we’ll explain exactly what’s wrong, how to diagnose it and why replacement is rarely the best option.

What does the U0103 fault code mean?

U0103 means that the vehicle has “lost communications with the gear shift module”. In Layman’s terms, the ECU or the TCU is no longer receiving the correct signals from the module mounted beneath the gear lever (J587)

In which cars do we see the U0103 fault?

The fault is becoming increasingly common on VAG models built from 2012 onwards, primarily built on the MQB platform, and equipped with a DSG transmission

This includes the following cars:

Audi: A1A3, and Q2

Cupra/Seat: AronaAtecaIbizaLeon, and Tarraco

Skoda: FabiaKamiqKaroqKodiaqOctaviaRapid, and Superb

Volkswagen: ArteonGolf SportsvanGolf 7PassatPoloT-CrossT-RocTiguanTouran, and Transporter T6

Symptoms and driver complaints associated with this fault

U0103 is responsible for a variety of symptoms that can frustrate drivers.

  • Dashboard warning: A message such as “Fault: Electronic Parking Brake” may appear on the instrument cluster. Warning lights, such as a yellow warning triangle, a yellow gear with an exclamation mark, may also illuminate. These would point to a transmission fault.
  • The car is stuck in Park (P): In severe cases, the shifter will be physically stuck in Park.
  • Transmission in limp mode: Although less common with just this specific fault, in some cases, the car can enter this protected mode.

Step by Step: Causes and Diagnostic Tips for the Workshop

  • Power and Ground: Always check the basics first. Is the shift module (the shift lever itself) receiving power?
  • Wiring and Connectors: In some situations, moisture damage can cause malfunctions. A pin in the connector of the automatic shift lever may be broken or corroded, preventing a good connection.
  • Mechanical Blockage: Is the shift lever physically stuck in 'P'? Use the emergency release under the shift lever cover to make the car movable. This is often done by pressing or turning a yellow lever, depending on the type of mechanism.
  • The main suspect: the shift mechanism. Have you ruled out the wiring and fuses? In 9 out of 10 cases, the electronics in the gearshift mechanism itself are defective. Components in the gearshift lever wear out or become contaminated, causing internal defects. This causes the signal to fail, and the car no longer "knows" whether it is safely in Park mode.

The solution for Fault Code U0103 / 28775 / 049411: Remanufacturing the gearshift lever

The solution is to replace the gearshift lever. However, a new unit is expensive, while the quality and condition of a used (second-hand) part are often uncertain. Therefore, ACTRONICS offers a remanufacturing solution for this defective DSG gearshift mechanism. We thoroughly address the weak points in the electronics.

  • Quality: We don't just replace what's broken, we improve the component wherever possible.
  • Plug & Play: Because we remanufacture the customer's own original unit, subsequent programming or learning is no longer necessary.
  • Cost-saving: Remanufacturing is significantly more affordable than a new factory part.
  • Warranty: You receive a standard 2-year warranty on the remanufacturing.
  • Sustainable: By remanufacturing, we reduce waste together. Fewer raw materials, lower CO2 emissions, and the same quality as new.
