MX-5: The World's Best Selling Convertible

The world's best-selling convertible
Mazda’s MX-5 has just been awarded an almighty moniker. The World’s Best-Selling Convertible! It’s not the first time the plucky MX-5 has been honoured either, back in 2000, it gained cultural status as the world’s best-selling two-seat roadster.
It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, though, with more than 1.2 million MX-5s rolling off the Ujina production line in Hiroshima, Japan. Production has spanned four distinct generations since its launch in 1989 and has been known by numerous names, the MX-5, Miata, Eunos Roadster and Mazda Roadster.
The MX-5 is often referred to as a natural successor to the great British sports cars of the 1950s and 1960s, with cars like the Lotus Elan being used as a design benchmark. But where the Elan used highly strung engines and composite panels, the MX-5s delivers results with more ordinary engineering.
The result is a sports car that exudes reliability, but not at the cost of its excellent handling and balanced styling. Today, the MX-5 is available in two variants: a fabric roof soft top roadster and the “RF”, a retractable fastback hard roof version.
Mazda UK's thoughts on the accolades
When asked, Mazda UK’s Managing Director, Jeremy Thomson, had this to say on the MX-5’s legacy. “When it comes to driver engagement, the current generation MX-5 has established itself as a benchmark sports car, and with the latest Mazda MX-5 we continue to offer one of the most exciting and satisfying to drive cars money can buy, one that stands out even more than ever, thanks to a market place that has seen many other lightweight driver’s cars and convertibles disappear from sale.”
He added, “The MX-5 is Mazda’s brand icon, and it embodies all that is great about our products. Mazda’s unceasing commitment to refining the vehicle over its 35-year history is highlighted by today’s MX-5, which continues to be an affordable, engaging, world-class sports car. It’s also worth noting that when the MX-5 launched in the UK in 1990, it cost £14,429 – that’s more than £35,000 when adjusted for inflation, so with today’s MX-5 starting at under £30,000, it’s better value than ever."
