Volkswagen Polo Crowned “Best Car of the Half Century”

The VW Polo has been named “Best car of the half century” as part of the Best Cars of the Year – The New Car World Championships. There is no doubting, this is a prestigious accolade that coincides with the iconic German supermini’s 50th anniversary. The Polo follows in the tyre tracks of the Golf, which received the same honour last year, on its golden jubilee.

The Polo debuted in 1975 and has since evolved through six generations, achieving over 20 million global sales, solidifying its position as one of the most successful small cars of all time.

The Mk1 Volkswagen Polo launched in 1975

Automotive journalist and award founder Mike Rutherford praised the Polo’s enduring success:

“The 20 million motorists who have been buying Volkswagen Polos since 1975 can’t be wrong. It’s the most consistently credible supermini of the past 50 years – affordable, durable and long-lasting. From the original Mk1 to today’s Mk6, the Polo has grown in size, quality and relevance, evolving from a basic supermini into a credible, borderline premium family hatchback.”

Beyond its everyday appeal, the Polo also boasts a strong sporting pedigree. The Polo R WRC claimed four World Rally Championship titles, while performance models like the GT, G40, and GTI have kept excitement alive for enthusiasts.

Half a century on, the Polo continues to embody affordable mobility with broad appeal, proving that “small but mighty” is more than just a slogan. It’s the essence of Volkswagen’s enduring supermini.
