After years of extensive research, the electronics experts here at ACTRONICS have launched a remanufacturing solution for the infamous PSA/Stellantis onboard charger. Our solutions resolve common issues with home charging for electric models from brands like Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall. Our high-quality, warrantied alternative to replacement is now available to the trade, saving customers huge amounts of money.

Years of Research

Most mechanics are familiar with our remanufacturing solutions. ABS Modules, ECUs, and Instrument clusters, among other things, but as the global transition to alternative fuels continues, demand for alternative remanufacturing solutions is increasing. Deep in our R&D department, our ACTRONICS EV team has been working for some time to reverse engineer a variety of EV onboard chargers fully. A variety can already be repaired, but one of the most notorious from the PSA/Stellantis vehicles wasn’t.

Growing awareness of the failure of these units, fitted in approximately twenty different models from across the Stellantis group, built from 2019 onwards. Once the fault is present, owners are no longer able to charge at home; instead, they can only use DC fast charging, or in some cases, not at all. Sander Fieten, R&D Manager at ACTRONICS, explained, “The earliest indicators of an issue with these onboard charges emerged a few years ago. But now, the scale of the problem is coming to light, as these vehicles fall out of their warranty period, and dealers are increasingly unwilling to repair as part of a goodwill gesture. Due to this, demand for an affordable alternative grew rapidly, so we accelerated our research to successfully repair these units.”

An all-new process

The research has been completed, and a remanufacturing solution is now available so mechanics, garages and dealerships can send in faulty onboard chargers for expert remanufacturing. We’ve built a complete EV remanufacturing department, a major operation that is unique in the industry. “We and our team have worked incredibly hard not only to identify the issue, but to resolve it. Working on parts like these is a new level of complexity. We’ve faced new challenges and had to develop new solutions throughout the process.” Fieten is immensely proud of the reliable result and process his department has developed. “We didn’t rush anything, ensuring both we and our customer can work safely on this high-voltage system.

With thorough research, we have a clear picture of the weak points and existing defects. We reuse parts that are still in good condition but replace areas that could lead to premature failure. This is not only more sustainable but makes the repair more cost-effective, more than half the price of a new replacement,” concluded Fieten.
