The Mercedes-Benz 9G-Tronic automatic transmission (type 725.0, NAG3) is known for refined shifts and efficient control. When the P073E00 fault code is present, it indicates a problem with the reverse gear ratio. The TCU sees that the trans,ission is not reaching the correct ratio when reverse is selected. The result is that the reverse does not engage properly.
P073E00 – What does the fault code mean?
The TCU constantly compares input and output measurements with the expected ratio specification. If this ratio deviates when reverse gear is selected, the P073E00 – "Incorrect reverse gear ratio" fault will be stored. Sometimes, this fault appears in tandem with P07B700, P0606 or P060C.
P073E00 – What are the symptoms?
The primary issue is the failure to select reverse gear. Mechanics and drivers often also experience:
- Intermittently operational reverse gear
- The car is not moving despite selecting reverse
- Jerking when shifting to reverse
- Limp mode that causes the car to remain trapped in third gear (D3)
