All hail the XC60: Volvo's new best seller

For years, Volvos were known for being boxy, but good. The iconic 240 estate defined an era with its straight lines, safe design, and unwavering reliability. It was a staple for families around the world and, for many, the blueprint of what an estate car should be.

But times have changed. The estate has largely made way for the SUV, and Volvo is no exception. Today, the brand’s top seller isn’t a boxy wagon; it’s the sleek and sophisticated XC60.

Introduced in 2008, the XC60 is Volvo’s mid-size SUV that quickly gained traction globally. Originally produced in Europe, it became the first Volvo model to also be built in China to meet growing demand. By 2018, it was named World Car of the Year, and the latest generation, with its plug-in hybrid drivetrain, now leads European sales in its segment.

While the XC60 embraces modern styling and electrification, it still upholds the Volvo tradition of safety, practicality, and smart engineering, just in a more refined SUV-shaped package.

The boxy charm of the 240 may live on in memory, but the XC60 proves that evolution doesn’t mean abandoning what made Volvo great; it means reimagining it for today.
