About KIA
The Kia brand as we know it today originated in South Korea in 1986. In that year, a partnership was started with Ford, which allowed Kia to produce some Ford models under its own name. This cooperation lasted until 1997, the year in which Kia went into bankruptcy due to the Asian financial crisis. Ford was very interested in a takeover, but was trumped: 51% of the shares eventually were sold to Hyundai. From 2005, Kia began to focus on the European market and with success: Kia now sells more than 3.5 million cars a year.
